Shyly, tenderly, I share that my first poetry and writing chapbook is out in the world!
These poems and short prose pieces span the last six years and subjects such as love, transness, tortillas, outer space, and punk youth. You can purchase copies online here or in person at Flower World. I’m working on a small New York release with readings by friends, so stay tuned <3
An enormous, enormous thank you to Shoestring Press for the printing. They have been holding it down providing Free Palestine signs and posters at no cost and I am so grateful to have had a reason to work with them. I also want to extend gratitude to publications like Precog Mag and Field Meridians who have invited me to contribute poems and so encouraged the expansion of my writing practice. I am forever indebted to all the brilliant poets in my life.
Related to writing, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be a guest teacher for my friend Cody Cook-Parrot’s new writing group Landscapes on Saturday, July 27th. Cody and I text almost daily about the processes, challenges, and joys of writing and this co-writing space is one of the things I am most looking forward to through summer and fall. Never Catch Me by Darius Simpson is now on my wish list after reading the poem above reposted by my friend Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo, a light and inspiration who brings poetry into all parts of their life (especially organizing work).
I’m listening to this episode of the Spiral Times while I’m in the studio:
Prison, Poetry & Fighting for Freedom | Samir Al-Amir & BB
“This is an extended conversation with Samir Al-Amir, a liberated prisoner from Aida Refugee Camp who spent 19 years in occupation jails. We discuss hunger strikes, education via smuggled phones, the collective struggles of incarceration, keeping poetry alive inside prisons, the many forms of resistance and adjusting to life outside a cell while yet to be free.”
And highly recommend this episode of Millennials Are Killing Capitalism for connective threads of solidarity between Kenya, Sudan, Congo, Haiti, and Palestine: May 19th: “The Kenyan Elites Are Loyal Lieutenants of Imperialism” with the Kenya Organic Intellectuals Network.
Lastly, the biggest thank you to the artists and clients who contributed to Flower World’s Gaza fundraising flash day last week! We collectively raised just over $5200 for these two families (you can donate directly at the links) and I’ll be directing a portion of all chapbook sales here as well:
